2013 Detroit Open 5 & Under

The weekend of March 2-3, 2013, the Detroit Curling Club once again hosted the USWCA sponsored Open 5 & Under Bonspiel.

This year, there were 26 teams that were interested, but only 24 could register.  The 24 teams came from nine different curling clubs, the CCC being one of them.  From the Columbus Curling Club were four teams.  The teams were:

Rink Johnson             Rink Moellman             Rink Huffman             Rink Hartranft
Skip, Eric Johson        Skip, Ryan Moellman      Skip, Adam Huffman    Skip, Jeff Hartranft
Vice, Mike Pintar        Vice, Jim Reinaker          Vice, Bryan Wilson      Vice, Alex Harnocz
2nd, Andy Hartsig       2nd, Evan Western          2nd, Ryan Greene         2nd, Vince Vidrick
Lead, Scott Conover    Lead, Craig Wickman      Lead, Will McLain       Lead, Julie Harnocz

Rink Johnson made a great showing going undefeated in the first three draws.  This earned them a trip to the A Event Final, which they Won!  Bringing home the title for the CCC.

Vice, Jim Reinaker
2nd, Evan Western
Lead, Craig Wickman

Rink Moellman also made a great showing going undefeated in the first three draws.  Their point total earned them a trip to the B Event Final, which they also won!

 Rink Huffman (left to right)
2nd, Ryan Greene
Lead, Will McLain
Skip, Adam Huffman
Vice, Bryan Wilson
(We are in height order!)

Rink Huffman started a little flat losing our first game.  However, we made a great come back the rest of the spiel.  We won our next two games, and earned enough points in the 3rd game to get us into the D Event Final, which we won as well!

2nd, Vince Vidrick
Vice, Alex Harnocz
Lead, Julie Harnocz

Rink Hartranft had a great showing as well.  They won their first game, but had to face Rink Johnson in their second match for a Columbus vs Columbus show down.  Unfortunately, only one C-bus team could advance undefeated.  Rink Hartranft then went on to win their third draw with a nice come back!  Their point total for the weekend earned them 9th place for the weekend.

All four Columbus Teams finished in 9th place or better for the weekend.  Of the four, three made it to an event final, and all three won their final!  This really speaks to the time and dedication put in by not only each of the team members, but all the instructors at the Columbus Curling Club.  We are really growing and improving with leaps and bounds!

From the information we received from Bret Jackson, the coordinator the 5 & Under Spiel, I created this point tally and bracket spreadsheet.  In it, we can see how well the C-Bus teams did throughout the weekend.

2012 Mayfield Men's Invitational

2012 Mayfield Men's Invitational Bonspiel

In November of 2012, Rink Wickman and Rink Hartranft headed to the Mayfield Curling Club in South Euclid, OH, for the 26th Men's Invitational Bonspiel.  The teams were composed of:
Rink Hartranft
Jeff Hartranft, Tracy Lutze, Larry Cook, & Vince Vidrick (is this right?)

Rink Wickman
Ryan Greene, Adam Huffman, Craig Wickman, & Bryan Wilson
(From Left to Right)

On the way there, it would seem as though we were doomed to have a tough weekend.  We were exiting the high way, when we had an accident with a pick-up that went through a red light.
The guys immediately got on their phones and had guys from the other team come and pick most of us up.  I stayed with the car.  The rest of the team then got to the club, started playing with a sub for me, and I got there in the second end.  We then WON, by beating the champs from the prior year.  Not bad.

We then ended up with a rental for the rest of the weekend.  I wonder if someone was compensating for something?

There was also a steak dinner, which was wonderful and a house party at a member's home, which was beautiful.  While there, they had actions and a raffle.  Rink Wickman won a shirt, and then our entry fee back!  Pretty cool!  We split the money, but couldn't do that with the shirt, so we drew to the button after our next match, which Ryan Greene won.

Overall, it was a good weekend!

Rice Lake Men's Invitational 2013

2013 Rice Lake Men's Invitational

In February, 2012, two teams from the Columbus Curling Club traveled to the Rice Lake Curling Club, in Rice Lake, WI.  We had such a good time, that we returned again in 2013 with three teams!  As you can see, they have a four sheet club, with wonderful ice.  Last year, the temps were in the 40's, which is really warm for February in Wisconsin.

This year, we got to experience temps as cold as 17 degrees BELOW zero.  It was great!  Also, we managed to unify our gear a little from the obsessive compulsiveness of Bryan Wilson.  Don't we look pretty?!

Both years, a group of us stayed at the Wickman family farm in Spooner, which is about 30 minutes North of the club.  Mamma Wickman is in the photo.  She was so great while we were there and came to watch a lot of the curling with other cousins and family members as well.  It was like the Columbus Teams had the largest cheering section.  Talk about a home sheet advantage!

The teams were:

Rink Wickman                             Rink Moellman                       Rink Johnson
Craig Wickman - Skip (Lead)      David Van Daren - Lead        Jonathan Yardley - Lead
Ryan Green - Second                   Larry Cook - Second              Jack Gaynor - Second
Bryan Wilson - Third                   Tracy Lutze - Vice                  Stephen Imes - Vice
Adam Huffman - Vice (Fourth)    Ryan Moellman - Skip           Eric Johnson - Skip

Last year, we took the Broom Shooter that was created by Steve Shaffer.  It was so popular at the club, someone from Rice Lake made one of their own.  So, when Eric Johnson brought it from the CCC again this year, we were able to do whole sheet broom shooters, with the chant, "Broom Shooter, Broom Shooter, SWEEP, SWEEP, SWEEP!" Then everyone takes a shot of their beverage of choice.

Considering that we had some strong competition, the teams did relatively well.  They had the brackets posted on the walls, which I pictured.

We ended up with two teams from Columbus in the Finals!!!  Not bad, if I do say so myself.  Rink Wickman was in the 3rd Event, and Rink Moellman (Lemke) was in the 4th Event.

Of course, the entire trip didn't revolve around curling.  We were so near the home of the Leinenkugel's Brewery, that we had to hit it again. Below, we are photographed in the Leinie Lodge.

Well, I can't speak for everyone else, but I had a blast and plan on heading back again next year!!!
